Aquae Sulis - The Waters of Sulis
The Great Bath
Of course, we had to visit the sight that put this city on the map. The Romans built a spa here in 73 AD, giving it the name Aquae Sulis. The Anglo-Saxons later referred to the spa as Baõum, meaning “at the baths.” Of course, it evolved into the modern name - Bath.
Bath’s rise to fashionable status came about during the 18th century when it became a place for the English aristocracy to be seen and take the healing waters of the spring and to bathe in the water. This concludes the admittedly very incomplete history lesson for today.
We really enjoyed the tour and were so pleased that it was not peak tourist season. We were able to take our time at each of the displays and listen to the audio guide without being bounced around like a pinball by throngs of people.
Following the tour, we couldn’t help but remind each other of the presence of more Roman ruins. It has become a running joke between us that we find ourselves near Roman ruins no matter where we go in Europe.
Our day concluded with an enjoyable evening spent with our Airbnb hosts. We were graciously invited for drinks, light snacks, and engaged in delightful conversation. This was the first stay where the rental property is situated on the property where the owners reside. The charming cottage was originally a garage and work space. During the lockdown period of 2020, they undertook a renovation project that transformed the space into a charming English cottage. It was a pleasure to spend time with both of them.
Until Next Time…
